In Situ Measurement of Soil Organic Carbon in Diverse Landscapes

In situ measurements with a mobile soil laboratory, the Subterra Green, are used to characterize the soil organic carbon (SOC) concentration down to a depth of 90 cm. The instrument measures diffuse reflectance spectra from 400 to 2500 nm and also the insertion pressure needed to insert the probe into the ground. The instrument makes physical measurements only, without adding any chemicals to the ground nor extracting any soil samples. The measured data are calibrated and validated against laboratory measurements of soil cores. The result is the ability to determine the SOC on a site inexpensively with accuracy and precision. Current applications are research projects in Europe and the USA. S4 Mobile Laboratories invites collaborations with researchers interested in SOC and other soil properties.
