Akiki’s innovative approach and potential impact on agriculture worldwide.
—— By: AgroServ/Alberto Akiki, IUSS Pavia and the University of Teramo
In Central Italy, ancient wheats are gaining renewed attention as climate-resilient crops. Alberto Akiki, a PhD researcher at IUSS Pavia and the University of Teramo, is studying the emmer wheat supply chain and validating its sustainability, together with local food businesses under the supervision of Prof. Giampiero Sacchetti.
Through AgroServ’s transnational access programme, he is among the first users to receive free access to services across AnaEE-ERIC and METROFOOD-RI. Following project approval, access managers guided the implementation through pre-agreed analyses.
“AgroServ has become an important stepping stone for the project, offering free access to further research units and enhancing the project’s credibility.”
In-depth nutritional and functional characterisation of emmer accessions will be carried out at AnaEE-ERIC (CIHEAM Bari), with complementary socio-economic surveys at CETRAD and food prototyping at METROFOOD. By combining these perspectives, the project aims to assess the sustainability of emmer foods for both the environment and local communities – and to promote alternative crops through rigorous science.
